100 years in less than 3 minutes: Maine firefighters show department history in heartfelt video

The Cumberland Fire Department is celebrating its 100-year anniversary at the town fairgrounds on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when members will present static displays, hand out food items and organize fun activities for attendees.

It’s a big milestone, and, to drum up interest in the celebration, the department released a high-quality two-and-a-half-minute video filled with heartfelt comments by current firefighters as well as photographs taken throughout the group’s history.

Old black-and-white images depicting what’s today considered antique equipment are shown alongside color photos of Cumberland rescuers on the scenes of more recent train derailments and vehicle crashes.

The photographs serve to illustrate the evolution of the department over 100 years fighting fires and saving local lives — and you can see the uniforms, trucks and protective gear change from one picture to the next through the decades.

The video finishes with a call for folks to join the department and plug into what’s clearly a proud and well-documented history. Watch the video for yourself up above, or click here to visit the CFD YouTube channel.
